Two teams have stood atop of the Smoky Mountain Conference volleyball standings this year: The Murphy Bulldogs and the Rosman Tigers.

Those two teams saw their first action against each other last week. Murphy headed into the match 9-0 while Rosman was 5-0.

Murphy won the first two sets before dropping their first set of the season 25-22. They handily won the fourth set and took home the win, all but giving them a first place bid into the NCHSAA 1A state volleyball tournament.

Murphy is led by Seniors Grace Nelson and Sarah Pullium, along with Junior Torin Rogers and Sophomore Olivia Payne.

I knew going into this season that the seniors on this team would play hard as long as they were given the chance to compete this year.

Seeing these girls play all season with their masks on has been a sight. It is definitely a shock seeing student-athletes wearing masks while they are out there playing and sweating. It has been a great thing though to see the season come this far and coaches and players coming together with games being cancelled and stuff. It gives me hope that the upcoming basketball and football seasons for North Carolina are not just a pipe dream.

It is also very encouraging to see a local team do as well as these Lady Bulldogs have done. They will be competing for the Smoky Mountain Conference Championship against Rosman on New Years Eve. Murphy beat Rosman earlier this year 3-1. That is the only set that the Bulldogs have lost this year.

The chart below shows the Smoky Mountain Conference standings as of last week.

Scoring Points: Congrats to the Fannin seniors

Team FYN Sports
scoring points

#TeamFYNsports would like to take the time to congratulate the 2020 Seniors on the Fannin County football squad. The Rebels fell to the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricanes Friday night in the Elite Eight of the GHSA playoffs.

This team made it deeper into the playoffs than any other team in Fannin history besides the 1995 team. This team also won 2 playoff games, which made the programs total playoff wins double, going up to 4.

Offensively and Defensively they were also historic, allowing the least amount of points scored in program history, while also scoring more points.

I have had the pleasure of covering this team all year long, and the thing that has impressed me the most, more than all of the accolades and wins, is the way that these kids and coaches love each other. You hear about how football teams are supposed to be families all the time. However there’s no doubt in my mind this is the model that other teams should follow. They were down coming out if halftime in their first two playoff games this year, and instead of getting down or blaming each other or themselves, they built each other up and came together and advanced to the next round.

We would like to individually recognize every senior on this historic championship team.

Scoring Points: Congratulations to the MAC Super Bowl Winners

On Saturday, November 14th, Chestatee High School hosted the 6-11u Mountain Athletic Conference Super Bowl games. #TeamFYNSports live streamed these games all day and let me tell ya, we saw some great football this past weekend.

We want to congratulate all of the winners and runner-ups for their performance in Super Bowl IV.

As you can see, we had three White County teams make and appearance, along with three Pickens County teams, two Fannin County teams and two Chestatee teams. The future is bright for all of these programs, especially the ones that had multiple teams in the Super Bowl games.

I know that I had a lot of fun broadcasting some of these games and all of us here at Team FYN Sports hope that all of the kids had a great time win or lose.

The 9u and 10u games were probably the most exciting as the both came right down to the wire and were both defensive battles. On the other side of that though, we saw an offensive shootout in the 11u Gilmer vs Chestatee game, a game where Gilmer put up over 50 points. Cole Cable, one of Chestatees top players and their Quarterback, was knocked out of the game early due to a big hit he took. I personally think that if he was able to stay in the game and did not get hurt, this game would not have ended up with the Gilmer County Bobcats running away with it.

We want to thank our hosts at Chestatee High School for being so kind and welcoming to us and helping our broadcast team with everything that we needed. We could not have pulled off this production with you guys.

Scoring Points: Athletes required to wear masks during competition

When you enter a High School gym in North Carolina, things will look a lot different than what you have become accustomed to if you have been to sporting events in Tennessee or Georgia.

Not only will the coaches and fans be wearing masks, now the players will be wearing them too.

In an email sent out yesterday to North Carolina High School Athletic Association members, the association announced that players are required to wear face masks during practices and contests, beginning Monday.

Previously, athletes were not required to wear masks when they were actively competing or practicing.

The NCHSAA also said a student with a medical condition that would not allow them to wear a face mask during competition would need medical clearance from a licensed doctor.

Que Tucker, the NCHSAA commisioner wrote in the email:

“NCHSAA staff members have received additional reports of volleyball teams being quarantined, which we know will impact their first contests next week. Collectively we must do everything we can to mitigate against the continuing spread of COVID-19, and it is our belief that the above steps will assist those efforts.”

This decision has been a long time coming, and I would expect it to overflow into sports and activities that are not just inside.

The NCHSAA has already made it known that North Carolina High School sporting events will only be allowed 25 fans total. Most schools are only allowing home team parents.

This seems like complete insanity to me. I cannot imagine being a high school volleyball or basketball player right now, knowing that during live game-play I will be required to wear a mask.

Imagine, there’s one minute left on the clock and you have the ball at the top of the key in your last high school basketball game as a senior, and you cant catch your breath because you have a dang mask on and you are sucking wind because you have been playing in a hot gym for the past hour and a half.

I just do not understand this madness. Either let the kids play or don’t.

If I was a betting man I would venture to say that in North Carolina we don’t make it halfway through the winter sports season before all sports are cancelled.

Scoring Points: Farewell to Copper Basin Seniors

Just For Fun, Team FYN Sports

#TeamFYNsports wants to wish the Seniors from Copper Basin High School well as they find their way in life after football.

The Cougars unfortunately fell in the first round round of the Tennessee Secondary School Association State Playoffs to Clay County.

We want to take time to recognize all these seniors on the Copper Basin football team, as we have enjoyed covering them this year.

Congratulations to:

Wide Receiver/Defensive Back- Austin Collins

Wide Receiver/Defensive Back- Tim Jabaley

Wide Receiver/Defensive Back- Dawson Worthy

Quarterback- Bryson Grabowski

Defensive Back- Eli Patterson

Wide Receiver/Defensive Back-Jordan Johnson

Wide Receiver/Defensive Back- Tim Fair

Offensive Line/Linebacker- Larry Dye

Offensive Line/Defensive Line- Joseph Johnson

Offensive Line/Defensive Line- Blake Picklesimer

Center/Defensive Line- Chance Rollins

Offensive Line/Defensive Line- Hunter Perry

We expect to see a lot of these kids playing ball at the next level, including Bryson Grabowski who had his season ended early due to a torn ACL. He is currently 2-3 weeks ahead of schedule in his recovery and we at #TeamFYNsports cannot wait to see him come back better than ever after this injury.

Chance Rollins is another one that we look forward to seeing play on Saturdays in the future. Chance is a big time player on the offensive line and will make an impact on any college team that he plays on.

We also want to congratulate Head Coach Chad Grabowski. He led this team to a historic undefeated start and led the Cougars to be able to host a home playoff game.

Its been awesome to see the community rally around this team and we wish it could have ended better. Its hard to see a team as riddled with injuries as the Cougars were. We like to think it would have been a different outcome if the Cougars were able to stay healthy.

Scoring Points: TSSAA Playoffs are here

Just For Fun
scoring points

Copper Hill- The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association State Playoffs have arrived.

In our Team FYN Sports coverage area, we have a few Tennessee high school football teams that we cover, but because of the close proximity, there is none that we cover more than the Copper Basin Cougars.

The Cougars started the year out on a tear, going 6-0 to start the season. Then they ran into some bumps on the road. They saw their star Quarterback Bryson Grabowski go down with an ACL injury. Then they saw his backup get hurt. Then they saw a rise in COVID cases in their school system, which led to them canceling the last two games of their season against Fannin County and South Pitt, respectively. They are set to play Clay County at home this coming Friday in the first round of the TSSAA 1A state playoffs.

My question was, what if these COVID concerns extend into the playoffs?

“We’re all very concerned,” TSSAA executive director Bernard Childress told the Tennessean. “We’ve been working the last couple weeks on the brackets.

“But looking at those numbers, we’re planning and planning and planning, but looking at those numbers, we’re very concerned. It’s very concerning.”

We have already seen teams around Tennessee have to cancel games in which the winner would be advancing to the playoffs. We have also already seen teams forced to miss the playoffs due to Covid-19 conflicts.

If Copper Basin would have ran into their positive cases a week and a half later, they probably would have been forced to miss the post season.

Its a scary thought.

This is becoming more and more of a big deal as we advance into the playoffs. All we can do is ask that everyone be safe and take the necessary precautions so that we can see our beloved teams play for a state championship.

Scoring Points: Following Guidelines

Featured Stories

The Georgia High School Association has released “strongly recommended” game-day operation guidelines in order for the high school football season to proceed as normal when it opens for good on September Fourth. These game-day guidelines and recommendations are given to spectators and parents in order to ensure that the football season will be able to continue and so that these student athletes are able to play a whole season.

The guidelines include but are not limited to: Spectators are recommended to have their temperature assessed prior to entering the competition venue and should be denied entry if higher than 100.4 degrees. It is highly recommended that spectators always wear a facemask/covering if possible. Spectators should be restricted from direct competition areas and from visiting with student athletes and personnel before, during and after events. You can also probably expect a change in concessions, if your school is even offering concessions.

I know that this is not what a lot of us wanted to hear at all. If you are anything like me then you absolutely hate wearing a mask. And to be honest I do not really understand why I should wear a mask when I am outside watching a football game anyway.

But guess what?

Im going to do it.

Not for me, not for you, not for the governor or anyone else. I am going to do it for the kids. They can give me whatever stupid guideline they want and I am still going to follow it to help ensure that these kids are able to play a full season. I would hate to look back and know that just because I refused to follow guidelines, I was one of the reasons that a senior student-athlete didn’t get to play in his final home game.

I encourage all of our readers to put their pride aside for the sake of the kids and just follow the guidelines. All any of us want is for football to be back anyway, so now that its finally back lets keep it that way.
