North Georgia hiking trails to know

Appalachian Trail

If you’re an experienced hiker, you have likely heard of the Appalachian Trail. Indeed, this is the longest trail in the United States and in the world with a total of 2,190 miles crossing 14 states and starting right here in Georgia! This can be the start of a greater adventure, but as far as the Georgia portion is concerned, it starts at Benton MacKaye and evolves into the Aska Trails (see below).

Ocoee Whitewater Center

The Ocoee Whitewater Center is a wonderful place for fans of water sports, but did you know it also includes a 1-mile hiking trail that crosses a 330-foot suspension bridge? Enjoy 30 miles of trails within the Cherokee National Forest that are perfect for family bike rides as well as people with physical disabilities! One of our favorite trails within the Center is the 1.6-mile Rhododendron Trail, which is easily done in a day and takes you along the river.

Aska Trails

As we mentioned before, the Aska Trails Area is a fabulous spot for hiking in North Georgia. This 17-mile trail system is located in the National Forest near Deep Gap on Aska Road in Blue Ridge and ranges from 1 to 5.5 miles, offering different levels of difficulty. The trails climb to 3,200 feet and offer stunning views of the mountain ridges, as well as the shores of Lake Blue Ridge. The trailheads are located at Deep Gap, Stanley Gap, Shady Falls Road, and Forest Road 711 by via Campbell Camp Road. Note that there is a parking fee of $2 per vehicle.

Here are some of our favorite trails within the system:

Ellijay Area Trails

Did you know the town of Ellijay offers plenty of hiking opportunities? During your stay, don’t hesitate to hit the Ellijay Area Trails! Most of the top trails are located on the Eastern side of town and near the Cohutta area. Take a peek below to discover our favorites and add them to your hiking bucket list!
