The dog days of summerr got its name from diēs caniculārēs, or dog days, when the star, Siriius, and the sun are in the same area of the sky.
The Dog Days of Summer are upon us. What does that mean, though? Well, according to the Farmer’s Almanac, online , it doesn’t refer to our wonderful, four-legged puppers.
It does, however, refer to when the sun is in the same part of the sky as Sirius, the brightest star in the sky. Sirius is part of the constellation Canis Major.
Ancient Romans actually believed that Sirius contributed to the heat felt in the days that the star rose and set with the sun, which would be July 3-Aug 11. We know that the immense heat is caused by the earth’s tilt toward the sun, but it is a neat little tidbit to know. Coincidentally, or maybe not, Air Conditioning Appreciation Days are July 3-August 15.
If you’ve ever listened to a televised game of any sport, you might notice the announcers use the same phrases throughout the game. These cliches are as critical to the game as the fans. Skip Caray, “The voice of the Atlanta Braves.” His iconic voice once declared in the 1980s, when the Braves were anything but a powerhouse team, “Like lambs to slaughter, the Braves take the field.” Read more about the beloved baseball announcer here.
Of course, no one is more quotable than Yogi Berra, who was known for his “Yogi-isms” like “It’s deja vu all over again,” “You can observe a lot by watching,” and “Baseball is 90-percent mental; the other half is physical.” Learn more about the legendary figure here.
There’s no question about it, not all cliches are phrases. “We will rock you” is probably played in every sport, from curling to racing at every level from pee-wee to professional.
So, the next time you are catching the game, you can feel the electricity, when no lead is safe. Hopefully your team will blow the game wide open by playing like a well-oiled machine and dominate the boards.
